A beautiful and fantastical sugarskull rendition!
I wanted to do something more fantastical, something that incorporated bones/skeletons. My Day of the Dead art is concerned with human beings and their personalities; most other art in this subject I see is focused on skeletons and more folk-inspired design. Mariposa is the Spanish word for “butterfly,” and making them out of pure light visually recalls the copious amounts of candles often seen at Day of the Dead altars and festivals.
I’m always searching for new angles and attempting to grow as an artist. I’ve felt of late that my Day of the Dead pieces are a little too literal, so I’m making an effort to go in a more surreal and emotive direction.
