An alluring take on classic calavera imagery.
A relatively simple and traditional Day of the Dead portrait, this image still had enough requisite detail to keep me busy! Because of that, I didn’t feel compelled to belabor the background too much.
The name is a not-so-subtle allusion to catrina, which is synonymous in Mexico with the skeletal death figures associated with Dia de los Muertos (and is taken after Jose Guadalupe Posada’s iconic La Calavera Catrina etching). There are some visual allusions to that piece, most notably in the feathery headdress.
